ولد لانكستر فى عام 1933 م وهاجر إلى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية عام 1959 م
وعمل كأخصائي معلومات بالمكتبة الوطنية للطب في جامعة
Bethesda, Md., 1965-68; professor, U. Ill., Urbana, 1972-92 prof
ثم عمل كأستاذ فخري عام 1992 م
لانكستر يعد من علماء المكتبات المشهورين داخل الأوساط العلمية وعلى وجه الخصوص في إسترجاع المعلومات على الخط المباشر و لة كتاب شهير فى استرجاع المعلومات ترجمة الأستاذ الدكتور حشمت قاسم
و لانكستر مؤلف غير عادي و واسع الفكر في علوم المكتبات والمعلومات
